Surabaya – GIIAS Surabaya 2026 has opened as the largest edition of the automotive exhibition ever held in the East Java capital, with 14 new and returning brands helping drive a record 37 automotive participants.

The five-day exhibition, which opened on Wednesday, August 26, is being held at Grand City Convex and marks another expansion for the GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show as automakers look beyond Indonesia’s biggest markets.

Bigger Venue, More Brands

This year’s GIIAS Surabaya uses a total exhibition area of 15,000 square metres after the addition of a new hall at Grand City Convex.

According to the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association, or GAIKINDO, the event has also set a new participation record with 37 vehicle brands across passenger cars, commercial vehicles and motorcycles, supported by 25 automotive industry brands.

GAIKINDO Chairman Putu Juli Ardika said the strong participation reflected the importance of East Java in Indonesia’s automotive market.

Based on vehicle sales data through April 2026, East Java consistently ranked as Indonesia’s third-largest regional automotive market, contributing 9.1 percent of total national vehicle sales.

“GIIAS Surabaya is not only an exhibition for showcasing the latest vehicles, but also a strategic platform to expand the national automotive market while tapping into East Java’s significant potential,” Putu said.

The passenger car segment features 26 brands, including BAIC, BYD Group, Changan, Chery, Citroen, Daihatsu, GAC AION, Geely, GWM, Honda, Hyundai, iCAR, Jaecoo, Jeep, Jetour, Kia, Leapmotor, Lepas, Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors, Polytron, Suzuki, Toyota, VinFast, Wuling and Xpeng.

Foton represents the commercial vehicle segment, while 10 motorcycle brands are also taking part, including Aprilia, Kuprum, Moto Guzzi, Piaggio, Polytron, QJ Motor, Royal Enfield, Scomadi, Triumph and Vespa.

The arrival of 14 new and returning brands has become one of the key features of this year’s show, underlining the increasingly competitive nature of Indonesia’s automotive market.

Government Sees Positive Industry Momentum

GIIAS Surabaya 2026 was officially opened by Deputy Minister of Industry Faisol Riza, accompanied by East Java provincial representatives and senior GAIKINDO officials.

Faisol said the government remained optimistic about the performance of Indonesia’s automotive industry throughout 2026, citing positive developments in wholesale and retail sales, exports and the growing market for electrified vehicles.

He said the government was targeting domestic vehicle sales of more than 850,000 units this year.

“For the government, GIIAS is not merely an exhibition or a place for transactions, but a barometer of the health of the national industry and a meeting point for innovation and regional economic activity,” Faisol said.

The deputy minister added that the government would continue to work with the automotive industry to address challenges and support the sector’s contribution to the national economy.

East Java has also positioned itself as an important gateway for economic growth, with the regional government expecting the exhibition to encourage innovation and strengthen the competitiveness of the automotive industry.

The event comes as automakers continue expanding their presence across Indonesia, particularly outside the Greater Jakarta area, where regional markets are becoming increasingly important for both conventional and electrified vehicles.
