Kendari – Indonesia’s motorcycle market is not only about Jakarta, Java or other major cities. As economic activity and consumer preferences continue to develop in different regions, premium motorcycle brands are also looking beyond their traditional markets to find new opportunities.
That strategy is now being pursued by PT Piaggio Indonesia through the expansion of its official dealer network in Sulawesi. The company recently opened a new 3S dealer in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, bringing its Piaggio and Vespa brands closer to consumers in the region.
The new facility is operated by PT Putra Sulawesisedjati Perkasa and becomes the fourth official Piaggio Indonesia dealer in Sulawesi. For the dealer group itself, Kendari is its third outlet after Makassar and Gorontalo, less than two years after becoming an official partner in July 2025.
Why Regional Cities Are Becoming More Important
For premium motorcycle manufacturers, expanding outside major automotive centers can provide access to a different group of consumers. Regional cities with growing economic activity can create demand for products where design, brand identity and lifestyle are part of the purchasing decision.
Kendari is one example of this development. As the capital of Southeast Sulawesi, the city serves as an economic and administrative center for the surrounding region.
Piaggio Indonesia sees this changing environment as an opportunity to strengthen its presence in the eastern part of Indonesia. Instead of concentrating its network only in established automotive markets, the company is gradually moving closer to potential customers in cities that previously had more limited access to its products and services.
Ayu Hapsari, PR & Communications Manager of PT Piaggio Indonesia, said the expansion reflects the company’s effort to bring Piaggio and Vespa products and services closer to customers in Sulawesi.
One Location for Piaggio and Vespa
The Kendari facility uses Piaggio Indonesia’s Motoplex concept, which brings Piaggio and Vespa products together in one location.
The concept is designed to make the customer journey more integrated, covering vehicle sales, servicing and access to genuine spare parts. Customers can therefore deal with product purchases and ownership support at the same location.
The new outlet provides a showroom displaying the latest Piaggio and Vespa models, while its service area is equipped with standardized equipment and supported by trained technicians.
Genuine spare parts, accessories and merchandise are also available as part of the 3S operation.
For customers outside Java, the availability of these services can be just as important as access to the motorcycles themselves. Purchasing a premium motorcycle is not simply about getting the vehicle, but also about having a reliable place to maintain it and obtain original parts.
Sulawesi Is Becoming a Bigger Part of the Strategy
The Kendari opening is also significant because it is not an isolated expansion.
With four official Piaggio Indonesia dealers now operating in Sulawesi, the company is gradually creating a wider network across the island. Makassar provides an established major-city market, while outlets in Gorontalo and Kendari extend the network to other regional centers.
The expansion suggests that Piaggio Indonesia sees opportunities beyond the largest metropolitan areas.
For a premium motorcycle brand, a wider network can help address one of the challenges of serving consumers in geographically dispersed markets: distance.
Indonesia’s geography makes after-sales access particularly important. A customer may be interested in a premium motorcycle, but the availability of authorized service, spare parts and trained technicians can influence the final purchasing decision.
Expanding the dealer network can therefore help reduce that barrier.
More Than Just Selling Motorcycles
The Motoplex concept also points to a broader approach to premium motorcycle retail.
Piaggio and Vespa are brands where design and lifestyle have historically played an important role alongside transportation. A dedicated showroom can therefore function not only as a sales point but also as a meeting place for owners and enthusiasts.
This becomes particularly relevant as motorcycle communities continue to grow across Indonesian cities.
Andri Darmawan, Director of PT Putra Sulawesisedjati Perkasa, said the company considers Kendari to have significant potential in Southeast Sulawesi and expects the new dealer to make Piaggio and Vespa products and services more accessible to customers.
The challenge, however, is turning the opening of a new showroom into sustainable demand.
A larger network can improve accessibility, but long-term growth will depend on how well brands understand regional consumers, maintain service quality and develop communities around their products.
The Bigger Picture for Indonesia’s Premium Motorcycle Market
Piaggio Indonesia’s expansion reflects a broader shift in Indonesia’s automotive industry.
As major cities become increasingly competitive, manufacturers and distributors are looking toward secondary and regional cities where consumer demand is developing. The strategy is not necessarily about chasing the highest sales volume immediately, but about establishing a presence before a market becomes saturated.
For Piaggio and Vespa, Sulawesi provides an example of that approach.
The opening of the Kendari Motoplex adds another point to the company’s regional network while giving consumers in Southeast Sulawesi easier access to products, servicing and genuine parts.
If regional economic growth continues to create new groups of consumers interested in premium mobility, cities such as Kendari could become increasingly important to motorcycle brands looking to expand beyond Indonesia’s traditional automotive centers.
The latest Motoplex may therefore be more than another dealership opening. It is another indication that the competition for Indonesia’s premium motorcycle customers is gradually moving deeper into the country’s regional markets.
