Jakarta – The luxury MPV segment in Indonesia is entering a new phase as electrification becomes increasingly part of the premium automotive market. Instead of focusing only on cabin space, comfort, and executive-style features, newer models are combining those characteristics with hybrid technology, electric driving capability, and intelligent all-wheel drive systems.
One example is the GWM Wey G9 Hi4, which made its Indonesian debut at BCA Expo 2026. Introduced by Inchcape GWM Indonesia, the luxury MPV is offered with two powertrain options, Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), both using GWM’s Hi4 intelligent all-wheel-drive technology.
The arrival of the G9 Hi4 highlights a broader development in the premium MPV market. Electrification is no longer limited to smaller city cars or conventional SUVs, as manufacturers are also looking to apply hybrid technology to larger vehicles designed for families, business users, and long-distance travel.
Luxury Is No Longer Only About Cabin Comfort
For decades, the appeal of a luxury MPV has largely been associated with passenger comfort. Spacious cabins, premium materials, reclining seats, and features designed around rear passengers have traditionally been among the strongest selling points.
Electrification adds another dimension to that formula. A modern luxury MPV can now be expected to combine a premium cabin with lower-emission driving capability, electric-only operation in certain situations, and more sophisticated power management.
The GWM Wey G9 Hi4 illustrates this approach with a cabin designed around all three rows rather than concentrating the most important features only on the front or second row.
The second-row seats use Nappa leather and offer floating zero-gravity positioning, massage, and ventilation functions. The cabin also features a flat floor and spacious passenger area, while a 21-speaker audio system and 14.6-inch central control display are intended to support the premium experience.
For passengers who need to work or eat while traveling, folding tables are integrated into the seatbacks. The PHEV version additionally features a cooling and heating box, extending the vehicle’s comfort-oriented character beyond conventional seating and entertainment features.
This suggests that electrification does not necessarily replace the traditional strengths of a luxury MPV. Instead, it can become another layer of the overall product concept.
Two Powertrains for Different Usage Patterns
One of the more notable aspects of the G9 Hi4 is the availability of both HEV and PHEV variants.
The HEV uses a 1.67 kWh battery and produces a maximum combined system output of 263 kW and 782 Nm of torque. GWM states that the vehicle can achieve average fuel consumption of around 15 km per liter.
The PHEV takes the electrification concept further. It produces a maximum system output of 325 kW and 642 Nm of torque, while offering an electric-only driving range of up to 170 km for daily urban use.
Its total driving range exceeds 1,000 km under the stated conditions, while fuel efficiency is listed at up to 83.33 km per liter. These figures are particularly relevant for a large MPV because they demonstrate how plug-in hybrid technology can combine electric commuting with the flexibility required for longer journeys.
The PHEV can also be charged using both DC and AC systems. DC fast charging at up to 60 kW can take the battery from 30% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes, while 6.6 kW AC charging provides a more convenient option for home charging.
The vehicle additionally supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) at 3.3 kW, allowing the battery to supply electricity to external equipment during activities away from conventional power sources.
Intelligent AWD Adds Another Layer
Both G9 Hi4 variants use GWM’s Hi4, or Hybrid Intelligent 4WD, system.
The technology combines electric and gasoline power and can adjust power distribution according to driving requirements. In a large MPV, this type of system can provide an additional dimension to a vehicle that might traditionally be associated primarily with urban and highway use.
The concept is also consistent with GWM’s broader philosophy of offering different powertrain choices for different driving scenarios. Rather than positioning one technology as suitable for every customer, the company is providing both HEV and PHEV alternatives within the same luxury MPV model.
That distinction could become increasingly relevant as Indonesian consumers become more familiar with different forms of electrification. Buyers who do not want to depend on external charging can choose an HEV, while those who have access to charging and regularly make shorter daily trips may find the electric capability of a PHEV more useful.
Safety and Ownership Support Remain Important
Electrification and luxury features are only part of the equation for premium vehicle buyers. Safety and long-term ownership support also play an important role in determining whether a new vehicle can establish itself in the market.
The GWM Wey G9 Hi4 comes with a high-strength body structure and more than 20 intelligent driving assistance features under its Level 2 Intelligent Driving Assistance system. Its battery has also received a five-star C-EVFI 2024 safety certification, according to GWM.
The company is also offering several forms of after-sales protection. Owners receive free servicing and parts for six years or 60,000 km, a vehicle warranty for six years or 200,000 km, and an eight-year or 200,000 km battery warranty.
These policies are particularly relevant as electrified vehicles continue to enter segments where customers may place greater emphasis on long-term ownership confidence.
A New Direction for the Premium MPV Market
The GWM Wey G9 Hi4 enters Indonesia at a time when the definition of a premium MPV is becoming broader.
The segment is no longer limited to large cabins and chauffeur-oriented comfort. Hybrid powertrains, electric-only driving, intelligent AWD, advanced driver assistance, and flexible charging are becoming part of the discussion around what a modern premium people mover can offer.
At the same time, manufacturers still need to preserve the fundamental characteristics that make luxury MPVs attractive. Space, quietness, comfortable seating, premium materials, and convenience remain essential because the vehicle is ultimately designed around its passengers.
The G9 Hi4 combines these traditional elements with two forms of hybrid technology. The HEV is priced at Rp1.158 billion OTR Jakarta, while the PHEV is priced at Rp1.368 billion OTR Jakarta.
The vehicles are available through 19 official GWM dealers across Indonesia, with Aurora White and Nebula Black offered as exterior color choices.
Whether electrified luxury MPVs become a major segment in Indonesia remains to be seen. However, the arrival of products such as the GWM Wey G9 Hi4 shows that electrification is expanding beyond the conventional EV categories and beginning to reshape even the market for large, premium passenger vehicles.
