Jakarta – A Toyota Avanza driving along Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles might look like an ordinary family car. However, its presence tells a bigger story about the global automotive industry. The vehicle was built in Indonesia and is believed to have reached the United States through Mexico.
This unusual sight offers a glimpse into how far Indonesian-made cars can travel. While Indonesia is widely known as a major automotive manufacturing base in Southeast Asia, its role in supplying vehicles to overseas markets often receives less attention.
Mexico is one important destination. Several vehicles manufactured in Indonesia have been exported there, including models from Toyota and Suzuki. Some of these cars may eventually appear on American roads, although their presence in the United States does not necessarily mean they are officially sold there.
Toyota Avanza: From Indonesia to Los Angeles
The Toyota Avanza provides the clearest example of this cross-border connection.
In May 2026, an Indonesian automotive report documented an Avanza on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. The vehicle appeared to be a left-hand-drive version, consistent with cars configured for markets such as Mexico rather than Indonesia.
The Avanza is manufactured in Indonesia and exported to several international markets. Mexico is among its destinations. Data cited in the report showed that Toyota shipped 973 Avanza units from Indonesia to Mexico between January and March 2026.
That shipment helps explain how an Indonesian-built MPV could appear in California. Mexico and the United States share an extensive road network across their border, allowing vehicles registered in one country to enter the other under applicable rules.
However, the vehicle’s exact ownership and travel history were not independently established. Its Mexican origin was considered likely, rather than definitively confirmed.
The distinction matters. A car spotted in Los Angeles is not necessarily a vehicle officially offered by an automaker in the US market. It could have entered the country temporarily or through another lawful arrangement.
Suzuki XL7 Hybrid Also Reaches Mexico
Toyota is not the only manufacturer sending Indonesian-built vehicles to Mexico.
Suzuki has also established an export route for the XL7 Hybrid. In August 2023, Suzuki Indonesia announced the first shipments of the model to four countries in Central and North America: Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Honduras.
The initial shipment totaled 265 units across those four markets. The company planned to expand exports to additional countries as part of its international distribution strategy.
The XL7 Hybrid is produced in Indonesia. Its export program demonstrates how local manufacturing facilities supply vehicles designed to meet the requirements of different overseas markets.
Mexico is particularly relevant because its customers can purchase vehicles that are not necessarily available through official dealerships in the United States.
Although the XL7 Hybrid has a confirmed export history to Mexico, that alone does not establish that the model has been spotted on American roads. Its inclusion illustrates the broader export connection rather than a verified US road sighting.
Suzuki Ertiga Has an Established Export History
The Suzuki Ertiga is another Indonesian-built vehicle with a documented connection to the Mexican market.
Suzuki began exporting the Ertiga in 2013. The company later expanded shipments of the All-New Ertiga to Mexico, the Philippines, and other international destinations.
Mexico has also been an important market for the model. In August 2020, Suzuki reported that the All-New Ertiga recorded 591 units imported into Mexico that month. Its retail sales reached 452 units, giving it a 22 percent share of Mexico’s retail MPV segment during that period.
These figures are historical, but they show that the Ertiga’s presence in Mexico is not a recent development.
Like the XL7 Hybrid, the Ertiga demonstrates Indonesia’s role as a production and export base. However, there is not enough evidence here to claim that an Indonesian-built Ertiga has been specifically documented on American roads.
Why Indonesia Matters to the Global Car Industry
Indonesia’s automotive industry serves more than its domestic market. Manufacturers operate local production facilities that supply vehicles to customers across Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and other regions.
Toyota Indonesia, for example, exported 298,457 vehicles in 2025, according to company figures released in February 2026. That total reflects the scale of Indonesia’s manufacturing and export operations.
Suzuki has also built an international network for Indonesian-made vehicles. Models such as the XL7 Hybrid and Ertiga show how local factories can support demand in markets far beyond Southeast Asia.
These exports also highlight an important distinction in the automotive business. A vehicle’s manufacturing country, export destination, and final place of use can all be different.
A car built in Indonesia may be shipped to Mexico and later driven in the United States. That does not make it a US-market vehicle, nor does it establish that the manufacturer officially sells it there.
Indonesian-Built Cars Can Travel Further Than Expected
The Toyota Avanza seen in Los Angeles offers a compelling example of the global journey a car can take. Its likely connection to Mexico links an Indonesian production line to an American street.
The Suzuki XL7 Hybrid and Ertiga add further context, showing that Indonesia has supplied multiple models to the Mexican market.
Still, the evidence must be interpreted carefully. The Avanza has been documented on a Los Angeles street, while the export records for the Suzuki models establish their presence in Mexico, not their confirmed use in the United States.
Together, these vehicles reveal an often-overlooked side of Indonesia’s automotive industry. Cars manufactured in the country can cross oceans, enter distant markets, and sometimes appear in places where few people would expect to find them.
The next time an unfamiliar family car passes through an American city, its story may stretch much further than the road beneath its wheels.
