China’s Historic Hongqi Brand Enters Indonesia With E-HS9 Luxury Electric SUV

Hongqi E-HS9

Jakarta – China’s Hongqi automotive brand has officially entered the Indonesian market, bringing more than six decades of history to one of Southeast Asia’s most competitive automotive markets. The brand made its Indonesian debut at an event held at The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Mega Kuningan, with the Hongqi E-HS9 selected as its first model for local customers.

Established in 1958, Hongqi is recognized as China’s oldest automotive brand. Its history is closely connected with the country’s state institutions, as Hongqi vehicles were used by senior Chinese government officials and for various official events and state visits.

The brand has since evolved beyond its original role as a state vehicle manufacturer. Hongqi now operates as a global automotive brand, with more than 2.3 million customers across various international markets.

Its arrival in Indonesia therefore represents more than the introduction of another Chinese automotive marque. Hongqi is attempting to bring an established brand identity, Chinese design philosophy and premium positioning into a market where competition among luxury and electric vehicle manufacturers is becoming increasingly intense.

Hongqi Chooses Indonesia as Part of Its Southeast Asian Expansion

Hongqi sees Indonesia as an important market within its international expansion strategy. The company has already expanded into several Southeast Asian markets, and its Indonesian entry represents another step in building a wider regional presence.

For its local operations, Hongqi has partnered with Indomobil Group. The collaboration combines Hongqi’s automotive heritage with Indomobil’s established experience in Indonesia’s automotive industry.

The partnership is also expected to play an important role in building Hongqi’s dealer and after-sales presence in the country. For a premium brand entering a new market, customer support and long-term ownership experience can be just as important as the vehicle itself.

Xiao Xiao, General Manager of China FAW Group Import & Export Co., Ltd., said Hongqi has continued to evolve while maintaining the values that have shaped the brand since its establishment.

“Hongqi continues to evolve with the times. From our early journey to today’s generation of intelligent and electric vehicles, we continue to embrace innovation, design and technology while preserving the values that have shaped Hongqi for more than six decades,” Xiao said.

E-HS9 Becomes Hongqi’s First Indonesian Model

The first product introduced to Indonesian consumers is the Hongqi E-HS9, a full-size luxury electric SUV positioned as the flagship model in the brand’s lineup.

Hongqi describes the E-HS9 as a representation of its design philosophy, combining traditional Chinese influences with modern automotive technology. Instead of treating design purely as an aesthetic exercise, the company uses elements of Chinese culture and symbolism to establish a distinct identity for the SUV.

The E-HS9 incorporates what Hongqi calls its Signature Noble Design language. Among the key elements is the Taihe proportion, which is intended to represent harmony and balance.

The SUV also features a signature waterfall grille inspired by mountains and flowing water. A distinctive red line, another recognizable Hongqi design element, represents the brand’s Shang Zhi Yi philosophy.

Together, these details are intended to differentiate the E-HS9 from other luxury electric SUVs competing in the global market.

A Full-Size Electric SUV With a Strong Road Presence

The E-HS9’s large proportions are central to its flagship positioning. Hongqi describes the model as a full-size luxury SUV with class-leading exterior dimensions.

The large body is paired with a dual-electric-motor setup designed to provide strong performance while maintaining the smooth driving characteristics associated with electric propulsion.

Rather than focusing solely on acceleration figures, Hongqi’s approach emphasizes a combination of road presence, performance and comfort. This positioning puts the E-HS9 into a segment where luxury, interior experience and technology are key considerations alongside powertrain performance.

The vehicle is also designed around Hongqi’s “mobile fortress” safety concept. The approach reflects the brand’s historical association with official vehicles and its emphasis on passenger protection.

Hongqi has positioned safety as part of the vehicle’s broader identity rather than treating it as a collection of individual specifications.

Chinese Heritage Meets Electric Technology

The E-HS9 illustrates the broader transformation of Hongqi itself.

The brand began more than six decades ago with a role closely associated with China’s government and state functions. Today, it is using electric technology, modern design and intelligent vehicle features to establish itself as a global premium automotive brand.

That transition is particularly significant as Chinese automakers expand beyond their domestic market. Rather than competing purely on price, several Chinese manufacturers are now attempting to establish premium brands capable of competing with established luxury automakers.

Hongqi’s strategy is somewhat different from that of newer Chinese EV brands because it can draw on decades of historical identity. The challenge is turning that heritage into a proposition that resonates with consumers outside China.

Indonesia will be an important test of that strategy.

Building the Ownership Experience

Hongqi’s Indonesian strategy extends beyond vehicle sales. The company says the customer experience begins from the moment a potential buyer first encounters the brand and continues through ownership.

With Indomobil Group supporting the local operation, Hongqi plans to provide a more personalized approach covering consultation, vehicle ownership and after-sales services.

Andrew Nasuri, Director of Indomobil Group, said the partnership represents an opportunity to introduce Hongqi’s historical identity to Indonesian consumers.

“Hongqi is not simply bringing a new name to Indonesia, but a heritage that has been part of China’s history for more than six decades,” Nasuri said.

The approach could become particularly important as Indonesian consumers gain access to an increasing number of Chinese electric vehicles. Establishing trust in areas such as service, spare parts and long-term ownership will be critical for any new premium brand entering the market.

A New Chapter for Hongqi in Indonesia

Hongqi’s arrival adds another name to Indonesia’s increasingly diverse luxury electric vehicle market. The E-HS9 gives the brand an immediate flagship product rather than entering the market with a smaller or more affordable model.

Its combination of full-size SUV proportions, dual-electric-motor technology and a design language rooted in Chinese heritage gives Hongqi a distinctive starting point.

The bigger question will be whether the brand’s six-decade history can translate into the kind of premium appeal that Indonesian consumers expect from an international luxury automaker.

For now, Hongqi’s Indonesian debut marks a significant step in the brand’s transformation from China’s historic state-car manufacturer into a global luxury automotive name. With the E-HS9 leading the way, the company is beginning its Indonesian journey by placing heritage and electric technology at the center of its strategy.
