Komodo – Honda is best known in Indonesia for its motorcycles, but the company’s activities extend beyond developing and selling vehicles. Its presence also includes community support, disaster recovery and environmental initiatives, including recent efforts in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
Through PT Astra Honda Motor (AHM) and Yayasan Astra Honda Motor (Yayasan AHM), Honda has supported communities affected by an earthquake in NTT while also participating in efforts to protect the coastal environment around Komodo National Park.
Their efforts cover healthcare recovery and basic community needs. They also include environmental conservation around Komodo National Park.
These activities offer another view of Honda Indonesia. Motorcycles remain central to its automotive business. At the same time, the company also works with communities on social and environmental issues.
Supporting Healthcare Recovery After the Earthquake
AHM recently supported the recovery of healthcare services at UPTD Puskesmas Warsawe in West Manggarai Regency.
The company provided infrastructure and equipment for the facility. The support helps restore primary healthcare services in the area.
These services include outpatient care, childbirth services and emergency treatment. The support also covers electricity facilities, clean water and other healthcare equipment.
More than 7,200 residents from villages around Puskesmas Warsawe can benefit from the restored services.
Healthcare remains an important need after a disaster. Residents still require medical treatment while communities rebuild their daily activities.
Yohanes G. Floriani, head of UPTD Puskesmas Warsawe, said the recovery of healthcare facilities remains a priority. He also said the support gives residents reassurance during the recovery process.
AHM plans to continue its healthcare support through the revitalization of four Posyandu facilities in Nagekeo Regency.
The Posyandu facilities provide basic healthcare services for local communities. Their services include child growth monitoring, maternal health care and immunization.
They also support health monitoring for adolescents and older people. These services can help communities maintain access to basic healthcare after a disaster.
Honda’s Support Started During the Emergency Response
Honda’s involvement in NTT began during the emergency response after the earthquake.
Yayasan AHM worked with the local Regional Disaster Management Agency to distribute basic supplies. The assistance reached affected communities in Manggarai and Sikka regencies in August.
The aid included staple foods, blankets, medicines and vitamins.
Yayasan AHM also worked with local mosque management organizations to provide additional assistance. The support included religious equipment and school supplies.
The program also provided fishing equipment to help affected residents restore their livelihoods. In addition, communities received nutritious food packages for seven days.
The assistance included staple food packages for public kitchens. Residents with limited water access also received clean water.
These efforts show how disaster support can develop over several stages. Emergency assistance addresses immediate needs. Healthcare recovery can then help communities return to normal activities.
Honda Also Supports Environmental Conservation
Honda Indonesia’s activities in NTT also extend into environmental conservation.
Yayasan AHM worked with PT Mitra Pinasthika Mulia and Yayasan Pemuda Konservasi Indonesia to support a mangrove planting program.
The groups planted 10,000 Rhizophora stylosa seedlings at Loh Sebita in Komodo National Park.
The activity supports coastal ecosystem rehabilitation around Komodo Island. Mangroves play several important roles in coastal areas.
They help protect coastlines and store blue carbon. They also provide habitats for various organisms.
The program involved several local institutions and community groups. These included the Komodo National Park authority, the NTT provincial marine and fisheries office and the Manggarai environmental and land agency.
SMP Negeri 4 Satap Pulau Komodo, Komodo Village and local residents also took part in the activity.
The collaboration connects environmental conservation with community participation. It also supports efforts to maintain the ecosystem around an area known as the habitat of the Komodo dragon.
A Role That Goes Beyond Mobility
Honda remains one of the most familiar motorcycle brands in Indonesia. However, its presence in the country also reaches areas outside motorcycle sales.
The NTT programs provide a clear example. AHM and Yayasan AHM have supported emergency assistance, healthcare recovery and environmental conservation.
The healthcare program addresses an immediate community need after a natural disaster. The mangrove program takes a longer-term approach to environmental protection.
Both efforts involve local communities and institutions. They also show how an automotive company can participate in issues beyond mobility.
Rina Listiani, General Manager of Corporate Communication at AHM, said post-disaster recovery requires gradual and continuous support. She added that the goal is to help communities return to their daily activities.
For Honda, community involvement therefore does not end with motorcycle sales. The company’s activities can also reach the places where people live, work and access essential services.
This does not change Honda’s position as a motorcycle manufacturer. Instead, it shows another part of the company’s presence in Indonesia.
The NTT response connects Honda with healthcare recovery, humanitarian assistance and environmental conservation. These activities have little to do with motorcycle sales, but they still form part of the company’s wider relationship with Indonesian communities.
For consumers, Honda may remain primarily associated with motorcycles and mobility. Its activities in NTT, however, show that the company’s presence can extend beyond the road and into efforts that support communities and the environment.
